Retired Members Plan

IATSE Local 873 Health and Welfare Trust –
Retired Members Health Plan

It’s no secret, our bodies start to break down as we age. Our bones creak. We get aches and pains in places we never thought about before. And our immune systems weaken. The result is new and more complex health issues and higher healthcare costs for seniors. Not all these costs are covered by a government plan, which means retirees can end up spending a big part of their post-retirement income on healthcare. That’s why we introduced the IATSE Local 873 Retiree Health Plan.

It offers:

  • Comprehensive benefits are very similar to those offered to active members in the IATSE Local 873 Health & Welfare Plan.
  • Coverage for you and your spouse while you are alive; as long as any premiums (if owing) continue to be paid.
  • Continued coverage for your spouse for two years after your death.
  • Spouses must be added at the time that you take coverage; they cannot be added to the plan later. Coverage may be waived for a spouse if they are covered under another plan.

As a member of IATSE Local 873, you are part of a community dedicated to protecting your rights and best interests.

We’re proud to be able to offer you this coverage and encourage you to maintain your connection to our local, even after you stop working

Do I qualify? – You can join the Local 873 Retiree Health Plan if you:

  • Are at least age 65; have applied for & are approved for retired status with the union.
  • You must also have at least 10 years of eligible service. (See Eligible Service Equals)*
  • If you opt-out of retiree coverage, you can’t change your mind and rejoin the plan later. Keep in mind that while you can buy retiree health coverage on your own, you’ll have a tough time finding the same level of coverage offered by our plan at a similar cost anywhere else.

*Your eligible service equals*
Years of membership before January 1, 1998
plus
Years after 1997 where your employer contributions were greater than the cost of single coverage in the health plan that year.
Contribution amounts are calculated from June 1st through to May 31st the following year.

  • A member who retires with a minimum of 10 years will pay 50% of the cost of coverage while the plan pays the other 50%.
  • A member who retires with 20 years of service will pay 25% of the cost of coverage while the plan pays the other 75%.
  • A member who retires with 30 years of service will have 100% of the cost of coverage covered by the plan.
